All volunteers start out on probationary status, where they learn our standard operating procedures at calls, and take the Firefighter I course at the Bergen County Fire Academy. It is after the probationary period when the company sees proficiency and confidence, that they vote a probationary in as a voting member of the company. Besides fire school, new members are expected to attend weekly drills Tuesday Evenings, and respond to all calls via pagers that they can make.

State law requires any new applicants to be between the ages of 18 and 35. All applicants must reside in our fire district (or be able to respond to calls in town during the day), be medically qualified, go through a thorough background check, and must submit fingerprints. The process may take several months, therefore, if you are considering volunteering, it is best to begin the application process immediately.

Our Junior Firefighter Program is open to all students between the ages of 16 and 18. As a Junior Firefighter, you will go through a special Junior Firefighter Course at the Bergen County Fire Academy, and still respond to all calls via the paging system. All Juniors must submit their report cards at the end of every school term to insure adequate grades and attendance records. As a Junior Firefighter, there are also additional curfew and safety rules that must be abide to.

The borough of Fair Lawn and the local community rewards all volunteers with special privelages such as a volunteers discount card to use in dozens of shops, special access to the First Responders Weight Room in the Recreation Center, Memorial and Walsh Pool passes for the summer, special parking permits, and an annual clothing allowance based on the percentage of calls you make.
